Lifeboat Volunteers buoyed by Muirhall Energy grant

26 May 2026

Muirhall Energy has awarded a £4,200 grant to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) to support vital crew training across the Isle of Skye and the Kyle peninsula.

The contribution, made by the developer of the proposed Glen Ullinish II Wind Farm, will cover the full training costs for three volunteers at the Portree and Kyle of Lochalsh stations.

As a charity receiving no UK government funding, the RNLI relies on such donations to maintain its 24-hour search and rescue service. The impact of this readiness was clear in 2024, when local crews launched 61 times, rescuing 31 people and saving one life. With 90% of volunteers joining with no prior maritime experience, this funding is essential for turning local recruits into capable lifesavers.

Siobhan Jarvie, Communities Lead at Muirhall Energy, said:

“We are delighted to be supporting the RNLI, a charity whose work has such a vital impact across these coastal communities. It has been inspiring to learn more about the dedication of the Portree and Kyle of Lochalsh crews and to understand the level of expertise required to maintain such a demanding service.”

“Supporting local communities is at the heart of what we do, and ensuring the crews can access the training and resources they need is exactly the kind of positive, lasting impact we strive for.”

Paul McKeown, Fundraising and Partnership Lead at the RNLI, said:

“Every penny we receive is crucial. Without supporters like Muirhall Energy, we simply could not continue our vital work. This funding ensures our volunteers remain ready to respond whenever the call comes in.”

The stations also serve a wider role in their communities, hosting local events and delivering skills programmes for younger residents.

Muirhall Energy is proud to support such important initiatives, investing in the local volunteers and coastal safety measures that protect the Isle of Skye and surrounding communities.

Muirhall Energy welcomes applications for small grants and sponsorship from community groups close to its development projects, awarding grants quarterly. Further information can be found here.
