Muirhall Energy Submits New Elvanfoot BESS Applications

27 March 2026

Independent Scottish renewable energy developer, Muirhall Energy, has submitted proposals to South Lanarkshire Council to expand the consented Elvanfoot Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, located on land to the north of Leadhills Road, Elvanfoot.

The proposals have been developed following continued engagement with the community and key stakeholders. Phase 1 of the BESS is already consented and will deliver 9.8 MW of storage capacity. The newly submitted Phase 2 and Phase 3 applications would provide an additional 49.9 MW and 25 MW of storage respectively, significantly increasing the site’s contribution to Scotland’s flexible, low-carbon energy system.

Calum Sydney, Junior Development Manager at Muirhall Energy, commented:

“We are pleased to submit our plans to expand the already consented Elvanfoot Battery Storage System. The project will play an important role in strengthening Scotland’s energy infrastructure, enhancing energy security and improving overall grid stability.

“We remain committed to continuing to work with the local communities as these plans progress, ensuring local residents have the opportunity to share their views with the team and receive updates on the project.

“With the site located in close proximity to Priestgill Wind Farm, which is currently under construction, we are proud to support the area’s long-term economic and environmental ambitions. Together these developments demonstrate our dedication to delivering projects that bring meaningful local benefits while supporting Scotland’s clean energy future.”

The Phase 2 and 3 planning applications were submitted to South Lanarkshire Council in February and March and both are now validated and live on the planning portal. If approved, it is anticipated that construction would commence in Summer 2027.

Local residents are able to view all application documents on Muirhall Energy’s website and are invited to a drop in event on Thursday 2nd April in Crawford Village Hall, from 4.30pm - 6pm. There they will be able to view the application documents and speak to the team to have their questions answered.
